Cost Cutting and Management Highlight Cow-Calf Conference
Dec. 4 and 5 in Bismarck
Strategies to reduce costs and improve management will be
highlights of the North Dakota Cow-Calf Conference Dec. 4-5 in
Bismarck.
The event opens at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4, and continues
until 3:30, Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Doublewood Inn. Registration
is $10 and includes the Saturday lunch and a summary of
conference proceedings. The event will also include a trade show
featuring area businesses serving the livestock industry. For

Speakers and topics:
- North Dakota State University extension agricultural
economist Harlan Hughes will discuss the North Dakota
Integrated Resource Management Herd Summary. Hughes will
also help moderate a panel discussion on strategies to
reduce costs in beef operations.
- Wade Moser, executive vice president of the N.D.
Stockmen's Association will provide an update on the
current state of the North Dakota beef industry.
- Pat Jensen, vice president and dean of agricultural
affairs at NDSU, will discuss partnerships between NDSU
and the N.D. beef cattle industry.
- NDSU extension range specialist Kevin Sedivec will review
research on the mineral content of North Dakota's native
rangeland.
- Vern Anderson, a scientist at the NDSU Carrington
Research Extension Center, will discuss how combinations
of crop residue and agricultural processing byproducts
can be used for wintering cows.
- NDSU extension livestock specialist Chip Poland will
outline annual forage research in southwestern North
Dakota.
- Kris Ringwall, director of NDSU's Dickinson Research
Extension Center, will discuss a systems approach to the
beef business.
- NDSU extension veterinarian Charlie Stoltenow will
discuss the latest strategies for controlling Johne's
disease.
- Mike Smith of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association
will discuss the National Non-Fed Beef Quality Audit.
- Ivan Rush, a beef cattle specialist with the University
of Nebraska-Scottsbluff, will discuss ways to reduce
winter feeding costs.
The conference is sponsored by the North Dakota State
University Extension Service, N.D. Stockmen's Association, the
N.D. Beef Commission, the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment
Station and the N.D. Beef Cattle Improvement Association.
