Oilseeds Day Scheduled for Carrington Research Extension Center Dec. 15

Oilseeds Day, a day-long educational event sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service, will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and run until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC). Attendees will receive production and marketing information related to sunflower, canola and flax.

The educational sessions begin at 9:15 a.m. with "Rotation Considerations for Oilseeds," presented by Duane Berglund, extension agronomist at NDSU. "Disease Management with Oilseeds" will follow and focus on sclerotinia. Presenters will be Art Lamey, extension plant pathologist at NDSU, and Jim Harbour, area extension specialist/crop protection. Harbour is stationed in Carrington.

"Oilseed Production Economics" will be presented by Steve Metzger, adult farm management instructor in Carrington. The final morning session, "Oilseed Market Outlook," will be conducted by Curt Sturn, field manager for Northern Sun Industries in Enderlin, N.D.

The afternoon session begins at 12:45 p.m. with two 30-minute sunflower presentations. The first, "Solid Seeded Sunflowers," will be provided by Mark Zarnstorff, a researcher at the North Central Research Extension Center (NCREC) in Minot, and by Tom Olson, extension agent in Stutsman County. "Weed Management" will be presented by Brian Jenks, a weed scientist at the NCREC.

Flax will be the focus of sessions running from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. "Varieties and Planting Dates" will be presented by Blaine Schatz, a research agronomist and CREC director. The presenter for "Weed Management" will be Greg Endres, area extension specialist/cropping systems. Endres is based in Carrington.

The final session includes three 30-minute presentations on canola. "Dormant Seeding" will be presented by Richard Maine, extension agent in Wells County, and Bob Henson, research agronomist at the CREC. Endres will present "Weed Management in Canola," and the presenter for "Harvest Timing" will be Steve Zwinger, an NDSU research agronomist stationed in Carrington. Zwinger's focus will be on swathing.

Morning refreshments will be provided by the Northern Canola Growers Association. A catered noonday meal (Dutch treat) is scheduled from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. For more information about the event, contact Richard Maine at the Wells County Extension Office, (701) 547-3341.
