North Dakota Youth Attend National 4-H Congress

Eight youth delegates from North Dakota recently attended the 1998 National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. The delegates were Natalie Halstensgaard and Kendra Robbins from Milnor, Jacie Hansen and Monica Van Horn from St. John, Jessica Horner from Devils Lake, Aaron Kjelland from Park River, Dawn Narum from Galchutt and Markell Wanzek from Jamestown.

"Make the Difference" was the theme for the Congress, which drew about 1,300 delegates from across the United States and its territories. Delegates took part in a variety of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities focusing on leadership, youth empowerment and cultural diversity, and they participated in community service projects while attending Congress. The delegates also visited several points of interest, including Centennial Olympic Park, the CNN Center, the Carter Presidential Library, and the Martin Luther King Center.

Halstensgaard, 16, attends Milnor Public School and has been a 4-H member for seven years. Robbins, 17 and a junior at the Milnor school, has been involved with 4-H for more than 10 years. Hansen, 16, is a junior at St. John Public High School. Van Horn, 17 and a senior at St. John, has been involved in 4-H activities for eight years. Horner, 18, is a senior at Devils Lake High School and has been involved with 4-H for nine years. Kjelland, 17, is a senior at Park River High School and a 10-year 4-H member. Narum, 16, is a junior at Richland #44 High School in Colfax. She has been a member of 4-H for eight years. Wanzek, 16, is a junior at Jamestown Senior High School and has been involved with 4-H for nine years.

The North Dakota 4-H Foundation sponsored the delegates' trip to Atlanta. 4-H is the youth development program of the North Dakota State University Extension Service. It operates by volunteers working with extension agents located in county offices. To learn more about getting involved in 4-H, contact your local NDSU Extension Service office.
