Grain Legume Day Scheduled for Jan. 12 at Carrington

The North Dakota State University Extension Service is offering a day-long educational program covering field pea, dry beans, soybeans and chickpeas. The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC).

At 9:15 a.m., NDSU extension agronomist Duane Berglund will discuss rotation considerations for grain legumes. At 10 a.m., there will be a session dealing with disease management of grain legumes that focuses on sclerotinia; presenters will be NDSU extension plant pathologist Art Lamey and Jim Harbour, area extension crop protection specialist based in Carrington.

Two discussions on economics will follow in the morning. The first, scheduled for 11:15 a.m., features Steve Metzger, adult farm management instructor at Carrington. Metzger will address production economics, and he will be followed by NDSU extension crop marketing specialist George Flaskerud, who will provide a grain legume market outlook.

Following the catered luncheon (Dutch treat), there will be two sets of concurrent afternoon sessions, each of which is crop specific. Attendees can participate in one session per set. The first set focuses on field pea and soybeans and the second, on dry beans and chickpeas.

The session on field peas will include a presentation on weed management by Greg Endres, area extension cropping systems specialist based in Carrington. Field pea fertility will be the topic of a presentation given by Blaine Schatz, CREC director. Dick Roland, manager of Legume Logic in Crosby, will talk about the complementary effect of peas in a rotation. This session will conclude with a panel discussion on market opportunities.

For the soybean session, Endres will talk about row-spacing options and weed management. Fertility management will be the topic of the presentation given by Tom Olson, the cropping systems agent in Stutsman County for the NDSU Extension Service. Berglund will discuss harvest management.

Berglund will also discuss market class selection during the session on dry beans. Two stand-establishment topics, row spacing and planting rates, will be the focus of the presentation given by Richard Maine, the cropping systems agent in Wells County for the NDSU Extension Service. Fertility management will be discussed by Bob Henson, CREC research agronomist, and Harbour will talk about weed management.

The chickpea session will feature two presentations. One provides an overview of chickpea production, from establish through harvest; the presenter is Steve Zwinger, CREC research agronomist. There will also be a grower and processor panel discussion.
