Tri-State Corn Symposium Scheduled for Jan. 13 in Fargo
The Tri-State Corn Symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the Fargo Holiday Inn. This educational event will provide corn growers with information related to producing high-quality corn for processing.
Sponsors are the North Dakota State University Extension Service offices in Cass and Richland counties, the University of Minnesota Extension Service offices in Clay and Wilkin counties, the South Dakota State University Extension office in Roberts County, and the Golden Growers Cooperative, based in Fargo.
The symposium is structured around four concurrent sessions, each of which is offered during four 55-minute sessions, two of which are in the morning and two in the afternoon. An exhibit hall will also be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Economical weed control in corn will be the topic of one session, and the presenter will be Richard Zollinger, extension weed specialist at NDSU. Developing a 1999 marketing plan is the subject of another session, presented by George Flaskerud, extension crops marketing specialist at NDSU. The issues of crop insurance and risk management will be addressed by Douglas M. Hagel, program services branch chief for the Risk Management Agency in Billings, Mont.
The fourth concurrent session will feature a corn industry panel discussing transgenic crops. The panelists will be Bob Joerger with Cargill Hybrid Seeds, Walt Stachon with Novartis Seeds, Dean Pedersen with Mycogen Seeds, Tom Frappier with Pioneer Hi-bred International Inc. and Tracy Klingaman with DeKalb Genetics.
The keynote speaker for the luncheon is Scott Davis, a senior market analyst for Pro Farmer, an Iowa-based advisory service for agricultural marketing. Davis directs a team of analysts who develop the risk-management strategies, cash sales and hedge recommendations for about 30,000 Pro Farmer customers worldwide. Following the luncheon, the North Dakota Corn Growers Association will hold its annual meeting.
