IFYEs Discuss Travel Abroad

Two North Dakotans who participated in the 1998 International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) will be discussing their experiences resulting from six-month stays in Greece and Germany during a speaking tour scheduled to extend into early March.

While in Greece, Christopher Carlson spent time with shepherds, fishermen, wine producers and others to better understand modern Greek agriculture. He also visited archeological sites linked to Alexander the Great and Aristotle. Carlson is an honors graduate from the University of North Dakota. His parents are Robert and Mary Carlson of Glenburn.

Shannon Schlecht toured many historic sites in Germany while farming with his host families. He also acquired a new skill while abroad: carpentry. A graduate of North Dakota State University, Schlecht is involved in his family's farm near Enderlin with his mother, Joan. His father is the late Reuben Schlecht.

The counties where Carlson and Schlecht will be speaking include Barnes, Benson, Bowman, Burleigh, Cavalier, Dickey, Dunn, Eddy, Golden Valley, Grand Forks, Grant, Hettinger, Kidder, Logan, LaMoure, McHenry, McIntosh, McKenzie, Mercer, Morton, Mountrail, Oliver, Pembina, Ransom, Renville, Richland, Sargent, Sheridan, Slope, Steele, Stutsman, Walsh, Wells and Williams. For more information about times and dates, contact a county office of the NDSU Extension Service.

The IFYE program is coordinated by the 4-H youth development office of the NDSU Extension Service. Financial support for Carlson and Schlecht's trips was provided by the North Dakota Association for Family and Community Education (NDFCE).

"FCE members throughout North Dakota have supported the IFYE program in the state for 50 years," says Amy Fuglestad, 4-H youth international programs coordinator at NDSU. "With FCE help, more than 330 North Dakota youth have visited other countries since 1948."
