Annual Cow-Calf Day Scheduled at Carrington Research Extension Center Feb. 3

The annual Cow-Calf Day at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC) has been scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 3. The free workshop begins at 1 p.m. and continues until 5 p.m. The center is located 3.5 miles north of Carrington on Highway 281.

The program will open with an outline of new findings on Johnes Disease by NDSU Extension Veterinarian Charles Stoltenow. Next, John Dhuyvetter, area extension livestock specialist, will address this question: Do crossbreeding programs really work?

Economic concerns will also be addressed. Steve Metzger, coordinator of the Carrington Farm Business Management Program will discuss the program and how it works in livestock enterprises. NDSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Greg Lardy will discuss options for reducing production costs by reducing labor needs in a cow-calf operation.

Foster County Extension Agent Kurt Froelich will discuss Beef Quality Assurance Programs. Vern Anderson, CREC livestock researcher will discuss results of recent research on using field peas and wheat midds as a creep feed for calves.

Finally, NDSU Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist Bruce Bainbridge will discuss how to use the stocker futures contract.
