Sugarbeet Grower Meetings Scheduled

Four educational meetings designed for sugarbeet growers in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota are set to begin in late January and extend through mid-February. Each of these identical seminars will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at about 3:30 p.m.

The first seminar will take place on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Fargo Holiday Inn. The second, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, will be held at the Grand Forks Ramada Inn. The third seminar is scheduled for the Wahpeton Eagles Club on Thursday, Feb. 4, and the final seminar is slated for Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Grafton Parish Center.

Each seminar consists of four sessions. The first session will focus on the control of cercospora and other sugarbeet diseases. The presenter will be Art Lamey, North Dakota State University extension plant pathologist. The second session will be presented by Alan Dexter, sugarbeet weed specialist for the NDSU Extension Service and the University of Minnesota Extension Service. Dexter will discuss micro-rate herbicide applications and provide a research update on Roundup Ready and Liberty Link sugarbeets.

At noon, there will be a Dutch-treat luncheon available for attendees. A slide show highlighting finalists from the 1998 Idea Contest will also be part of the day's events.

The third session of the day will feature Albert Sims and Larry Smith from the University of Minnesota—Crookston. They will discuss fine tuning recommendations for nitrogen and phosphorus use in sugarbeets.

The final session includes a presentation on improving stand establishment, offered by Joseph Giles, an NDSU soil scientist. An update on lygus bug and root maggot control will come from Phil Glogoza, extension entomologist at NDSU. Concluding the seminar is a presentation on sugarbeet harvesting and yield losses, to be given by Allan Cattanach with American Crystal Sugar Company.

These seminars are being sponsored by the NDSU and the U of M extension services and the states' agricultural experiment stations, along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Sugarbeet Research and Education Board of Minnesota and North Dakota.
