Dairy Management Improvements Highlight Annual Cow College

Information on nutrition, facilities and waste-handling for dairy herds will be highlights of the North Dakota Dairy Cow College during the first week of Feburary.

Sessions will be held at sites across North Dakota. Each begins each day at 10:30 a.m. and adjourns by 4 p.m. The college is sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service and the American Dairy Association/Dairy Council?

The college will be held Monday, Feb. 1, at the Emmons County Courthouse Auditorium in Linton; Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Knights of Columbus Club in Dickinson; Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Morton County Fairgrounds Fair building in New Salem; Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Oak Valley Lutheran church in Velva and Friday, Feb. 5, at the Eagles Club in Jamestown.

Sessions include:

• A discussion of forage reconstitution and alternatives by George Marx, a dairy specialist with the Univesity of Minnesota-Crookston. Marx will also review research into the relationship between frame size of Holstein dairy cows and lifetime milk production.
• A review of waste-management strategies and regulations as they apply to the dairy industry by Scott Birchall, waste management specialist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center.
• A presentation on how enhancements to existing facilities can boost milk production and quality by J.W. Schroeder, extension dairy specialist at NDSU.
