Youth Entrepreneurship In-Service Training for Teachers, 4-H Leaders Rescheduled
An in-service training session designed for North Dakota elementary teachers in grades 3 through 6 and 4-H leaders has been rescheduled. Originally set for late January, the in-service, which focuses on youth entrepreneurship, now will begin at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Bismarck Radisson Inn. Day-long training, running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8 and 9, will take place at the Bismarck VFW Club.
Educators who attend will be introduced to the Youth Empowerment and Self-Sufficiency (YESS) Mini-Society curriculum, says Kathleen Tweeten, community economic development specialist with the North Dakota State University Extension Service.
YESS is an experience-based approach to teaching children entrepreneurship concepts. The curriculum is designed for children from ages 8 to 12. "But a number of teachers and youth leaders have found that YESS works for children as young as 6 and as old as 14," Tweeten adds.
Participants will increase their knowledge of economics, entrepreneurship, law, government and ethical concepts, Tweeten says. They'll learn how to detect teachable moments related to entrepreneurship, and they'll be trained to lead inquiry-oriented discussions with youth.
Cost to attend the session is either $20 (no credit) or $50 for those seeking one graduate credit in the NDSU continuing education program. Both options include an evening meal on Feb 7, lunch on both Feb. 8 and 9, and the YESS curriculum.
The in-service training session is sponsored by the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. For more information, contact Tweeten at (701) 328-5134.
