Canola Workshop Set for Feb. 24

A Canola Basics shortcourse will held on Wednesday, Feb. 24 starting at 1 p.m. at the International Inn, Minot. The shortcourse is being sponsored by North Dakota State University's North Central Research Extension Center, The Northern Canola Growers, and Archer Daniels Midland.

Program topics by research extension center personnel will include Kent McKay, area extension agronomist, discussing seeding, stand establishment, plant population and canola variety selection. Mark Zarnstorff, research agronomist, will cover fertility issues, sulfur sources and performance. Brian Jenks, weed scientist, will discuss weed control options and performance of transgenic types of canola. Jan Knodel, area integrated pest management specialist, will discuss insect concerns. McKay will also discuss when to swath, where canola fits in crop rotations and "How tight can one go?" Eric Mack, ADM, Velva, will conclude with a discussion on the market potential of the 1999 crop.

The shortcourse is free of charge and no registration is required.
