Lambing Seminar Set for Feb. 25 at Carrington

Getting lambs born alive and keeping them alive will be the focus of a half-day seminar at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center Thursday, Feb. 25.

"One of the most frustrating problems in sheep production is to lose a lamb at lambing time," says NDSU livestock specialist Karl Hoppe. "This seminar covers some key areas that frequently cause problems for producers."

The free seminar begins at 1 p.m. and will concluded at about 4 p.m. The schedule includes:

• Tips on baby lamb management. NDSU Extension sheep specialist Roger Haugen will discuss strategies for caring for and assisting lambs after birth.
• How to assist with difficult births. Hoppe will review when and how to help ewes deliver lambs.
• A low-labor approach to lambing. Tim Faller, director of the NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center, will discuss research on a low-labor approach to lambing and sheep management called "Easy Sheep." This new approach features an emphasis on maximizing profit rather than production through changes in management and genetics.
• Feeding the ewe flock. Haugen will discuss rations and feeding management for the ewe flock before and after lambing.
• Lamb marketing. Faller and Haugen will review options for selling lambs that are available to North Dakota producers.
