37th International Sugarbeet Institute Offers Time-, Money-Saving Ideas

The North Dakota State University Extension Service will be one of about 150 exhibitors at the 37th International Sugarbeet Institute, which is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, March 17 and 18, at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D. Admission is free both days.

"Sugarbeet producers can stop by our booth and pick up their new copy of the Sugarbeet Research and Extension Report and the 1999 Sugarbeet Production Guide," says Alan Dexter, extension sugarbeet weed specialist for North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota. He adds, "This sugarbeet trade show is the largest event of its kind in North America."

Sugarbeet producers stopping by the extension display will also be able to review the eight winning entries in the 1998 Grower Idea Contest. Dexter says this year's entries represent both time- and money-saving ideas that many producers may want to consider, given the current economic situation and the need to increase efficiency whenever and wherever possible. In addition, Dexter says the extension sugarbeet specialist position should be filled by then, with the new person on hand at the institute to meet producers.

On Wednesday afternoon, attendees can listen to humorist Mark Therrien talk about "The Power of Positive Insanity." On Thursday morning, Todd Stohlmeyer, a senior purchasing manager with General Mills, will offer a sugar-user's perspective on some of the key issues affecting the sweetener industry.
