Soil art, cheesemaking, insect collecting, crop identification and chick embryology are just a few of the experiences elementary teachers will gain in a new course at North Dakota State University. "Integrating Agriculture into Your Elementary Curriculum" will be June 28 to July 1 on the NDSU campus in Fargo.
"This course will give elementary teachers lots of hands-on experience for integrating agricultural science into their current curriculum," said Anissa Wilhelm, NDSU agriculture teacher educator. "They'll work in NDSU's ag labs and tour local farms and agribusinesses.
"The class will also include training in Project Food, Land and People. This is a new national resource that teaches critical thinking and problem-solving skills through 40 lessons that help students understand the interrelationships among agriculture, the environment and people of the world."
NDSU faculty from in the College of Agriculture and College of Human Development and Education will teach of the course.
The $125 registration fee covers three hours of credit in Human and Community Education (H&CE) 790 from NDSU, resource materials, some meals and local travel. An individual project integrating ag information into the elementary curriculum is required. Residence hall housing is available.
The class is limited to 30 participants, and applications are due May 21. For an application, contact Wilhelm at wilhelm@prairie.nodak.edu or 701 231-7439.
