The annual horticulture field day featuring flowers, ornamental grasses and turfgrass will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, at the trial gardens on the North Dakota State University campus in Fargo.
Designated an official All American Selection (AAS) display plot, NDSU's trial gardens are located on the western edge of the campus, along 18th Street North between 12th Avenue North and Centennial Boulevard. The plots lie directly west of buildings housing the North Dakota State Seed Department and the USDA Northern Crops Science Laboratory.
"The tour is open to members of the general public who have an interest in horticulture and turfgrass as well as turfgrass managers, park and golf course superintendents, and garden center operators," says Ron Smith, horticulturist/turfgrass specialist with the NDSU Extension Service. "This event is an especially good opportunity for homeowners because the gardens are not given any special care, just routine maintenance."
Formal presentations will occur at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and focus on annual and perennial flowers, Native American plantings, specialty gardens and turfgrass species. The specialty topics tentatively scheduled for discussion include xeric gardening, herb gardening, salsa gardening and cut-flower gardening.
Besides Smith, presenters include Barb Laschkewitsch, an NDSU horticulture specialist, and Jim Jordahl, an NDSU plant pathologist. All the speakers will be available to answer horticultural questions throughout the morning.
On the day of the event, look for signs along 12th Avenue. There will be a large tent and directions for parking set up near the trial gardens. For more information, contact Smith at (701) 231-8161.
