Range and Livestock Management to be Featured at NDSU Field Day on Sept. 12
A range and livestock management field day has been scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 12, at
the North Dakota State University Albert Ekre Grassland Preserve near Kindred.
The field day will open at 2 p.m. with remarks by NDSU President Joseph Chapman, NDSU
Vice President for Agricultural Affairs Pat Jensen and NDSU animal and range sciences
department chair Jerry Dodd. A series of tours around the preserve will highlight NDSU
range and livestock research. The field day will conclude at 6 p.m. with a meal. To reach
the farm, travel east from Kindred on N.D. Highway 46 to N.D. Highway 18. The Ekre
Grassland Preserve is located about 5 miles south on N.D. Highway 18.
Topics for the field day include:
- A discussion of research into plant diversity, production and stability in grassland
ecosystems by rangeland researchers Mario Biondini and Carolyn Grygiel.
- A review of research involving NDSU's beef herd by Russ Danielson.
- An outline of research into the nutrition of nursing calves grazing native sandhill
pastures by extension beef specialist Greg Lardy.
- A review of other current ruminant nutrition research by livestock nutrition researcher
Marc Bauer.
- A discussion of a new hair sheep project and a review of ewe performance in a
multi-species grazing trial by extension sheep specialist Roger Haugen and sheep
researcher Wes Limesand.
- A further discussion of multi-species grazing and rotational grazing studies by
rangeland researcher William Barker.
- A review of Natural Resources Conservation Service programs by district conservationist
Steve Fisher.
