Livestock Research Roundup Set for Sept. 30 at NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center

The North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center will hold its annual livestock research roundup beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, in conjunction with the West River Ag Expo and Livestock Show in Dickinson.

The roundup will open in the Auditorium of the Agriculture Building on the campus of Dickinson State University's West Campus. The event will feature new nutritional strategies and other opportunities for pigs raised in southwestern North Dakota, discussions on forage and pasture management, and beef research. The roundup will adjourn at 2:30.

Topics include:

• nutrition strategies to reduce pig starter feed costs
• using wheat screenings, field pea and canola seed as replacements for corn and soybean meal for growing-finishing pigs
• using barley and oats as forages
• use of pasture legumes in an integrated crop-livestock production system
• how repeated grazing or cutting at similar growth stages can negatively affect grass plants
• a review of annual forages for growing beef heifers
• heifer development research at NDSU
• a comparison of the effects of various growth implants on yearling beef steers
• the use of hull-less oats in growing horse diets
