The annual convention of the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association will be held in Mandan on Oct. 29 and 30. This year, the Dakota Lamb Growers Cooperative annual meeting will be held in conjuction with the association's meeting.
The program opens on Friday, Oct. 29 with a 6 p.m. ewe sale at Bismarck State College followed by a social and snacks, featuring lamb furnished by the cooperative. At 8:30 p.m., NDSU meat scientist Marty Marchello will discuss his recent travel to New Zealand, a place he calls "the North Dakota of the South Pacific." A 10 p.m. auction fundraiser will close the day's events.
Registration opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Seven Seas Motel and Convention Center in Mandan. At 8:30 a.m., the Dakota Lamb Growers Cooperative will hold an informational meeting. Leaders in the organization will discuss the history of the cooperative, give insight on how the cooperative works, discuss lamb numbers and distribution, give a producer's perspective and take questions. At 11 a.m., the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association will hold its annual meeting.
A noon luncheon will feature awards, including the North Dakota Master Sheep Producer Award, and a wool style show.
The afternoon program features an update on issues and research important to the North Dakota sheep industry. Frank Moore, vice president of the American Sheep Industry Association, will give an update on that organization. Phil Mastrangelo, new director of the N.D. Wildlife Service, will discuss his organization's activities and how they impact sheep producers. N.D. State Veterinarian Larry Schuler will discuss the state scrapie program. NDSU Extension sheep specialist Roger Haugen will review NDSU research with hair sheep and Tim Faller, director of NDSU's Hettinger Research Extension Center will review sheep research at that facility.
The program will close at about 4:30 after comments from Jim Marshall, Jr., president of the N.D. Lamb and Wool Growers Association.
