Walt Ness is NDSU Harvest Bowl Award Recipient

Long-time North Dakota county extension agent Walt Ness, Fargo, is the recipient of the 1999 Agri-business Award and will be recognized during Harvest Bowl at North Dakota State University Oct. 22 and 23.

A native of Edmore, N.D., Ness earned a degree in agriculture at NDSU and also attended graduate school in Colorado and Arizona. He spent 32 years with the NDSU Extension Service, working as an extension agent in Barnes, McLean and Traill counties before becoming agent in Cass County, where he served for 25 years. After retiring from extension, he worked for First Bank and for the Fargo Holiday Inn.

Ness has been active in the Red River Valley Fair, Agassiz Club, NDSU Harvest Bowl, President's Ag Club and extension service professional organizations. He received the Northwest Farm Managers Pioneer of the Year Award and was given a meritorious service award by the International Sugarbeet Institute.

In other Harvest Bowl activities, outstanding agriculturists from all counties in North Dakota and five counties in northwestern Minnesota will be honored, and student-athlete recipients of the 1999 Harvest bowl scholarships and the Robert Lauf Memorial Scholarship will be recognized.

Harvest Bowl scholarship winners for 1999 are Janna Ruebke, a senior setter on the NDSU women's volleyball team from Twin Valley, Minn., and Clint Gjellstad, defensive end on the Bison football team from Velva, N.D. The Robert Lauf scholarship goes to Chad Simmers, a linebacker on the NDSU football team from Fargo.

All honorees and scholarship winners will be recognized at the annual Harvest Bowl social, dinner and dance starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22 at the Fargo Holiday Inn. Outstanding agriculturist honorees will also take part in a campus tour and will be recognized at the Harvest Bowl football game between the NDSU Bison and the University of Nebraska/Omaha Saturday night.
