Irrigation workshops are scheduled for Wednesday Dec. 8, and Thursday Dec. 9, in Bismarck and Tuesday Dec. 14 in Grand Forks, according to Tom Scherer, extension agricultural engineer at North Dakota State University. The two Bismarck workshops will be held during the North Dakota Water Convention, which will also feature an irrigation equipment exposition.
The Dec. 8 workshop for experienced irrigators at the Bismarck Radisson Inn is sponsored by the NDSU Extension Service, the North Dakota Irrigation Caucus, the North Dakota Water Users and the Missouri Slope Irrigation Development Association. Topics covered will include irrigation and water development financing, irrigation research, irrigation scheduling, irrigated crops and groundwater quality, irrigated potato production, an update on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), chemigation, and diseases in crop rotations.
The Dec. 9 workshop at the Bismarck Radisson Inn is intended for those just getting into irrigation or interested in starting an irrigated farm operation. Topics will focus on fundamentals necessary to start irrigation, including identifying irrigable soils, locating an adequate water supply, water quality necessary for irrigation, obtaining a water permit, selecting irrigation equipment, irrigation water management, the economics of irrigation and high value crop opportunities.
The Dec. 14 Grand Forks workshop is at the Westward Ho motel. Topics covered will include remote sensing for nitrogen management, irrigation research results, tile drainage, diseases in crop rotations, an update on potato production, water resources in the Red River Valley, irrigated crops and groundwater quality, irrigation scheduling and using GIS/GPS for irrigation development.
Participants can register at the door at all three workshops starting at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $20 for each of the Bismarck workshops and $15 at Grand Forks. A copy of the current NDSU Crop Production Guide will be available at all workshops for $10.
Certified Crop Advisor Continuing Education Units will be available to participants. The number of units will be announced at the workshops.
