An educational program sponsored by the North Dakota State University Extension Service will be presented at four locations across the state in mid-November. Presenters will offer information about marketing crops and livestock in the year 2000 and beyond, the opportunities and pitfalls of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and an overview of 70 years of farm policy. Each of the four presentations will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and conclude at about 4:30 p.m.
The first presentation will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Ernie French Center located on the Williston Research Extension Center. Coordinator for this program is Randy Mehlhoff, area extension value-added specialist.
The Dickinson Travelodge Motel will host the second presentation, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18. The coordinator is Wayne Markegard, an extension agent in Adams County.
On Monday, Nov. 22, producers can attend the NDSU presentation at the Lisbon Eagles Club. Coordinating this meeting is Eugene Elhard, an extension agent in Dickey County.
The series will conclude in Grand Forks on Tuesday, Nov. 23, with a presentation at the Ramada Inn. Extension agent Willie Huot is the coordinator.
Besides discussions about marketing, GMOs and farm policy, the educational program will also cover the use of alliances and collaborations to enhance producer income and reduce costs.
"We'll be focusing on alliances involving machinery, livestock and land, along with a look at precautions to ensure the success of any alliance a producer might be considering," says Dwight Aakre, extension farm management specialist at NDSU.
Aakre is one of the program's presenters. Other presenters from the NDSU Extension Service will include George Flaskerud and Harlan Hughes, both agricultural economists who specialize in marketing.
The cost to attend any of these programs is $10 per person and is payable at the door. No preregistration is required. Attendees will be responsible for their own lunch.
