North Dakota Cow Calf Conference Set for Dec. 4 in Minot
Range management, marketing and how to evaluate feeding strategies are key topics at
this year's North Dakota Cow Calf Conference scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4, in Minot.
The conference opens with registration at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. It will be
held at the North Dakota State University North Central Research Extension Center near
Minot. Those attending will receive a printed copy of proceedings and lunch for their $10
registration fee.
Topics and presenters include:
- Evaluating self-limiting supplements for yearling steers, Chris Schaurer, research
associate with the NDSU animal and range sciences department.
- Limiting nutrients for nursing calves grazing native range, Tim Loy, research associate,
NDSU animal and range sciences department.
- New technologies to predict carcass composition, Marty Marchello, meat scientist, NDSU
animal and range sciences department.
- Feeding wheat midds, Vern Anderson, animal scientist, NDSU Carrington Research Extension
Center.
- Evaluation of the U.S. Forest Service National Grasslands Management Plan, Jerry Dodd,
chair of the NDSU animal and range sciences department.
- High Selenium Beef An opportunity for a niche market? John Finley, USDA-Agricultural
Research Service Human Nutrition Laboratory, Grand Forks.
- Multi-species grazing to control leafy spurge, Kevin Sedivec, range management
specialist, NDSU animal and range sciences department.
- Cafeteria grazing of native range and cool season grasses with yearling steers, Jim
Karn, USDA-Agricultural Research Service Northern Great Plains Laboratory, Mandan.
- Choosing the right alliance, Don Scheifelbein, executive director of the American
Gelbvieh Association.
The afternoon will close with a panel discussion on how to make alliances work for you.
Panelists include Audie Bacha, manager of Butts Feedlot near Carrington; Ken Niewoehner, a
cattle producer from Deering; Brian Amundson, Jamestown area feedlot operator; and Dale
Effertz, Mandan area rancher.
