Market-Planning Workshops Scheduled in December for Crops, Livestock

Six one-day market-planning workshops will be held across North Dakota during early and mid December. Registration for each workshop begins at 8:15 a.m, and the programs all start at 9 a.m.(local time) and end about 4 p.m.

"Marketing plans will be developed for what is in inventory as well as for next year's anticipated production," says George Flaskerud, a crops economist with the North Dakota State University Extension Service and one of the workshop presenters.

The dates and locations for the workshops are Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Dickinson Travelodge; Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Bismarck Doublewood Inn; Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Fargo Holiday Inn; Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Williston International Inn; Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the Minot Holiday Inn, and Thursday, Dec. 16, at the Grand Forks Ramada Inn.

Flaskerud, along with NDSU extension economist Harlan Hughes, will guide development of the marketing plans, which will include strategies for wheat, feedgrains, oilseeds and livestock. Fundamental and technical analysis will underpin the strategies. The analysis will examine spreads, basis, seasonal price patterns, loan deficiency payments and breakevens. A key component of the analysis will be whether to sell or hold inventory.

In addition, a panel of local marketing club facilitators will discuss their clubs and how to participate. Time will be provided for the facilitators to meet with workshop participants individually. Clubs are being organized in or near the counties of Adams, Barnes, Bottineau, Burleigh, Cass, Dickey, Divide, Eddy, Fort Berthold, Foster, Golden Valley, Grand Forks, Griggs, Hettinger, McLean, Morton, Mountrail, Pembina, Pierce, Ramsey, Ransom, Richland, Stark, Stutsman and Ward.

The workshops are a joint effort of the NDSU Extension Service, Farm Business Management Education Program, State Board for Vocational and Technical Education, and the Risk Management Agency at Billings. Admission is $5 and can be paid at the door. Preregistration is not required.
