A photo taken by a Kidder County 4-H'er has been chosen for the cover of the National 4-H Council calendar for 2001. Caleb Shipley of Steele, an eight-year member of the Rough Riders 4-H Club, captured the cover shot with a photo titled "Stillness." Selected by judges from more than 1,100 photos, Caleb's photo features a silhouette of a young boy fishing in a pond with a beautiful sunset blazing on the horizon.
"It's a wonderful photo," said Ed Gershon, director of the National 4-H Supply Service. "You should be proud of Caleb."
Photos from around the country were sent to the National 4-H Council by 4-H'ers hoping to see their photos in the calendar. Photos were required to be 8 inches by 10 inches, in color and in a horizontal format. Photographers also had to write a short essay on their thoughts about the photo.
The selected photos were gallery mounted and framed with an engraved brass plate containing the title and the photographer's name. The photos will be displayed in the National 4-H Council office for a month, then sent to the owners.
Caleb says he has spent a lot of time working on his 4-H projects over the years. Besides photography, his special interest, Caleb has participated in electricity and rabbit projects. The high school sophomore is also a member of the track team and helps around the family farm.
Caleb's photo and the other winning photos featured on the 2001 calendar can be viewed on the National 4-H Council Web site at http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/market/4hphoto/2001calpg1.htm.
