The percentage of children living with their grandparents represents a relatively small proportion of all children in North Dakota In fact, current census data show that in both North Dakota and Minnesota less than 2 percent of children live with their grandparents.
For North Dakota, 2,628 children resided with their grandparents in 1990, according to a recent publication by the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University.
The three states having the largest percentage of children living with grandparents were Hawaii, Mississippi, and South Carolina (all more than 9 percent in 1990). Nationally, nearly 6 percent of all children lived in households maintained by their grandparents, says Richard Rathge, data center director.
The majority of North Dakota children live with both parents. In 1990, 82 percent of children younger than age 18 resided in married-couple households, Rathge says. This proportion was down, however, from 86.4 percent in 1980.
The proportion of children living with single mothers rose from 7.8 percent in 1980 to 11.6 percent in 1990. During the same period, children living with single fathers rose from 1.7 percent to 2.6 percent.
