A long-time 4-H volunteer and former administrator with the North Dakota State University Extension Service will be inducted into the North Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame during a reception and ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, at the Fargo Doublewood Inn. The year 2000 inductee is Donald H. Peterson of Washburn, N.D.
With the inclusion of Peterson, membership in the North Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame now totals 35, says Arleen Bunt, development director for the North Dakota 4-H Foundation. She adds, "This is the highest honor awarded to anyone who has given of their time and talents to the 4-H program."
To gain membership into the 4-H Hall of Fame, a person must have been involved with North Dakota 4-H programs for at least 15 years beyond the membership level, Bunt says. An inductee usually has worked with 4-H youth and other volunteers at the local, area and state levels.
While serving as an extension agent in McLean County, Peterson demonstrated strong leadership in the organizational efforts and fund drive for the Western 4-H camp, which is located near historic Fort Mandan north of Washburn. Before retiring from the NDSU Extension Service, Peterson had moved up to the level of district director, serving the southwestern North Dakota counties.
Since his retirement Peterson has continued to remain involved with North Dakota's 4-H programs and youth development. He currently serves as a director on the North Dakota 4-H Foundation board.
