A second statewide dairy summit to address modernization of North Dakota's dairy industry has been set for June 22.
The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Gladstone Select Hotel, 111 2nd Street NE., Jamestown.
The last dairy summit, held three years ago, resulted in several strategies and programs designed to strengthen and position the state's dairy industry for the future.
"The industry has changed dramatically in the past several years, specifically in terms of reduced farm numbers and the growing interest in the future of the state's dairy industry," says J.W. Schroeder, dairy specialist with the North Dakota State University Extension Service.
Producers, processors, milk buyers and others in businesses and industry related to dairying in North Dakota are invited to attend the summit. Topics for discussion will include marketing, forward contracting, commercial dairies, plant capacity needs, milk marketing order impacts, the Dairy Diagnostic Program, quality of life issues and other topics.
Roger Johnson, N.D. Agriculture Commissioner, will open the summit. Doug Dukart, president of the N.D. Milk Producers Association, will outline goals for the meeting. Roger Scheibe, dairy director for the N.D. Department of Agriculture, will talk about the past, present and future of the state's dairy industry. Schroeder will give an update on the state's Dairy Diagnostic Program, one of the key programs that resulted from the last summit.
Persons planning on attending the summit are asked to call the N.D. Department of Agriculture at (800) 242-7535 or (701) 328-2299 and ask for Iris.
