Variety Development and Crop Research
Highlight North Central Field Day in Minot

Variety development, crop production practices and pest management will be highlights of the field day scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, at North Dakota State University's North Central Research Extension Center near Minot.

The day opens with refreshments at 9 a.m. and a welcome from Jay Fisher, director of the center, Pat Jensen, NDSU vice president for agricultural affairs, and Cole Gustafson, associate dean for agricultural research at NDSU. Throughout the day, a crop clinic will be open for diagnosing problems, and grain drying and aeration equipment will be on display with a company representative available for questions and discussion. The center is located one mile south of Minot on U.S. Highway 83.

During a crop production tour beginning at 9:30 a.m., NDSU crop breeders will discuss their efforts to improve small grains, including trials at the center. The tour will feature hard spring wheat breeders Richard Frohberg and William Berzonsky, durum wheat breeder Elias Elias, oat breeder Mike McMullen, barley breeders Richard Horsley and Jerry Franckowiak, and USDA sunflower geneticist Jerry Miller. In addition, NDSU agricultural engineer Ken Hellevang will review grain drying concepts, and NDSU extension cropping systems specialist Terry Gregoire will give an update on fungicide technology.

A free luncheon will be served after the tour.

An afternoon tour beginning at 1:15 p.m. will feature NDSU researchers and specialists discussing crop production issues and crop pest concerns. The tour will open with a discussion of disease forecasting tools and research by plant pathologist Len Francl. Extension plant pathologist Marcia McMullen will highlight late-season crop disease concerns. Extension crop production specialist Denise McWilliams will review good soybean varieties for north central North Dakota. Extension agronomist Duane Berglund will discuss soybean production concerns and opportunities.
