Oakes Irrigation Site Field Day is Aug. 15

The Oakes Irrigation Site, a cooperative venture between North Dakota State University and the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District, will hold its annual field day Aug. 15 at the site located four miles south of Oakes on State Highway 1.

The day's program will feature a morning field crops tour and an afternoon tour devoted to vegetable crops.

The morning tour will start at 9:20 a.m. with a presentation on weed control in corn, soybean and potato by NDSU weed specialist Richard Zollinger. Tom Scherer, irrigation specialist at NDSU, will discuss irrigation system maintenance. Plant breeder Ted Helms will give an update on soybean varieties, including the new Natto soybean. Weed scientist Cal Messersmith will discuss weed control in edible beans, and Marcelo Carena, the new corn breeder at NDSU, will give an update on corn hybrids.

A sponsored meal will be served at noon.

The afternoon tour will start at 1 p.m. with a presentation on weed control in onions and carrots by Richard Greenland, supervisor of the Oakes site, who will also give an update on sweet corn varieties and discuss growing carrots on beds vs. on flat ground. Rudy Radke, extension high value crops specialist, will discuss marketing vegetables, and NDSU horticulturist Ron Smith will give a presentation on growing herbs.
