North Dakota State University specialists will conduct two workshops in September on protecting North Dakota groundwater from nitrogen.
The workshops, primarily designed for extension agents, natural resource managers and crop and livestock consultants, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in McClusky on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Sheridan County Courthouse community room and in Oakes on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Ottertail Power community room. The workshops are free, and lunch will be available for a small fee.
The program will open with summary of the North Dakota Department of Healths on-going groundwater monitoring program. Next, NDSU Extension water quality specialist Bruce Seelig will explain a nitrogen assessment system he developed, and how the assessment system can be used to determine potential groundwater contamination from nitrogen. NDSU Extension livestock waste management specialist Scott Birchall will discuss livestock waste management facilities and nutrient management systems for groundwater protection. NDSU agricultural engineer Lowell Disrud will present preliminary results from a variable rate nitrogen application research project being conducted at the USDAs Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory in Mandan. The Mandan research project is attempting to evaluate the postitive effects to groundwater of applying nitrogen to crops on a site-specific basis.
