A new conservation tillage manual is available from Midwest Plan Service. It is titled "Conservation Tillage Systems and Management."
This manual is a four-color publication containing 29 illustrated chapters of 270 pages on topics such as wind and water erosion, crop residue management, estimating residue cover, crop response to tillage systems, pest management, soil compaction, water quality and costs and returns. Several chapters present information on equipment for tillage, dry-land small grain equipment designed for direct seeding and no-till row crop equipment. Two additional chapters provide information on pesticide application equipment and precision farming.
This book was written by authors from industry, 20 universities, the Natural Resource Conservation Service and USDA-Agricultural Research Service. It will be a valuable source of information for those interested in principles and techniques of conservation tillage.
This manual is available for $25 from all county offices of the North Dakota State University Extension Service and from Extension Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at North Dakota State University. It can also be ordered online by referring to the Ag and Biosystems Engineering web site: http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/abeng/mwps.htm. This website also contains a listing of other MWPS publications.
MWPS is a regional activity of 12 universities in the Midwest that integrates research and extension expertise in producing multi-disciplinary educational materials for use in extension and other educational activities. Ag and Biosystems Engineering at North Dakota State University is the North Dakota contact point for Midwest Plan Service.
