4-H clubs from across North Dakota have raised money for the statewide Helping 4-H Grow program. The funds raised will help the North Dakota 4-H Foundation continue its financial support of 4-H programs at the county, state, national and international levels. Overall, 62 clubs from across the state contributed $1,700 this year.
"I like to think they’re giving to something they believe in, " says Arleen Bunt, development director for the foundation. "It’s important that we teach our young people the value of philanthropy and how good it feels to give to others."
According to Bunt, the donations come from a variety of sources. Some clubs organize community fund-raisers to raise the money, while other clubs donate the money directly from their treasuries. Some donations are also given by individual club members themselves.
The Helping 4-H Grow program in North Dakota involves three annual donation levels, $1, $3 or $5 per member, and it is structured around a five-year cycle. There are a number of incentives tied to each level, and the incentives increase in value each year. Incentives include certificates of appreciation, engraved plaques displayed either in their county extension office or the 4-H Hall of Fame, key chains, can huggers, desk clocks and calculators.
