North Dakota Cow-Calf Conference Scheduled for Dec. 5
The North Dakota Cow-Calf Conference has been scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5,
at the Doublewood Inn, Bismarck.
The conference opens with registration at 1 p.m. A $10 registration fee
includes an evening meal and a proceedings booklet featuring highlights from
each of the speakers. Jim Tilton, interim head of the North Dakota State
University animal and range sciences department, will welcome participants at
1:30 p.m.
Afternoon educational sessions include:
- An update of the anthrax situation in the region by Charles Stoltenow,
NDSU Extension veterinarian.
- A review of heifer development programs by A. Manuel Encinias, an NDSU
research specialist.
- The use of field peas in creep feeds by Doug Landblom, research specialist
at the NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center.
- Research into the use of byproducts from agricultural processing by NDSU
livestock nutritionist Marc Bauer.
- Research on trace mineral levels in North Dakota rangelands by Kevin
Sedivec, NDSU rangeland management specialist.
- Backgrounding nutrition research at the NDSU Central Grasslands Research
Extension Center near Streeter by NDSU Extension beef specialist Greg Lardy.
- Studies on feeding sclerotinia-infected sunflowers to beef cattle by Eric
Bock, a research specialist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension
Center.
- The use of crambe meal in cow cake by Vern Anderson, animal scientist at
the Carrington center.
John Stika, director of feeder-packer relations for the Certified Angus Beef
program, will discuss ways North Dakota producers can add value to their
commercial calves following the evening meal, social and trade show. The
conference is expected to conclude at about 8 p.m.
