Irrigation Workshops to be held in BismarckIrrigation workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 6, and Thursday, Dec. 7, in Bismarck, according to Tom Scherer, extension agricultural engineer at North Dakota State University. The two workshops will be held during the North Dakota Water Convention which will also feature an irrigation equipment exposition. Both workshops will be held at the Radisson Inn in Bismarck. They are sponsored by the NDSU Extension Service, the North Dakota Irrigation Caucus, the North Dakota Water Users and the Missouri Slope Irrigation Development Association. The Dec. 6 workshop is for experienced irrigators. Topics covered will deal with irrigation pump testing, irrigation scheduling, an update on irrigated drybean production, chemigation, canal sealing, irrigated corn, irrigated alfalfa and off-stream storage of irrigation water. The Dec. 7 workshop is intended for those just getting into irrigation or interested in starting an irrigated farm operation. Topics focus on fundamentals necessary to begin irrigating, including identifying irrigable soils, locating a adequate water supply, water quality necessary for irrigation, obtaining a water permit, selecting irrigation equipment, irrigation water management, the economics of irrigation and high value crop opportunities. Participants can register at the door for both workshops starting at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $20 for each workshop. Application for Certified Crop Advisor Continuing Education Units has been made and the number of units will be announced at each workshop. Most of the units are in the soil and water category.
