Nasty Weed Workshops Scheduled Jan 16-18The North Dakota State University Extension Service is conducting one-day Nasty Weed Workshops at three locations on Jan. 16, 17 and 18. The workshop will provide farmers and crop advisers with details on the biology and management of Canada thistle, common milkweed, quackgrass, and nightshade. On Tuesday Jan. 16 the Nasty Weeds Workshop will be held at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center, the Wednesday, Jan. 17, workshop location is the Jamestown Civic Center, and the Thursday, Jan.18, workshop will be conducted at the Emmons County Courthouse in Linton. At each location, registration and refreshments will be available at 8:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 9 a.m. The morning session will be devoted to controlling Canada thistle. Management of common milkweed, quackgrass, and nightshade species will be discussed during the afternoon. Workshop speakers include James Hunter, a Canadian research consultant who has devoted the majority of his career to Canada thistle management; Richard Zollinger, NDSU extension weed specialist; Gregory Endres, extension area agronomist; Wayne Markegard, Sioux/Emmons county extension agent; and Thomas Olson, Stutsman County extension agent. Workshop sponsors include the NDSU Extension Service, Stutsman County Ag Improvement Association, Emmons County Weed Board, and Monsanto. Continuing education credits in the integrated pest management category for the Certified Crop Advisers (CCA) program will be available to workshop participants.
