June 13 Field Day Set for NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center

North Dakota State University’s Central Grasslands Research Extension Center near Streeter will hold its 20th annual field tour beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13.

The tour will highlight livestock and grazing research and conclude with a free roast beef supper. The center is located four miles north of Streeter or 11 miles south of Interstate 94 on Highway 30, then five miles south on Stutsman County Road 38 and 1/4 mile south. The tour will start at the office near the livestock unit. Highlights will include:

  • a review of advances in livestock prodution and management by Greg Lardy, NDSU Extension beef specialist.
  • a hay baler safety demonstration by Vern Hofman, NDSU Extension agricultural engineer.
  • a discussion of ways to incorporate expired CRP stands into grazing operations. An overview will be provided by Jeff Printz, Natural Resources Conservation Service area range conservationist. Paul Nyren, director of the center, will discuss a nine-year CRP study underway and long-term economic returns. NDSU range scientist Bob Patton will discuss long-term changes in the plant community under the CRP. Livestock specialist Brian Kreft will outline prospects for long-term livestock production on former CRP stands. Finally, NDSU soil scientist Jimmy Richardson will talk about how grazing changes soils.
