Crops Research Will Be Highlights of July 19 Field Day in Carrington

Advances in traditional crop varieties, irrigation and high value crops, and crop pest management will be crop highlights of the annual North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center Field Day, Thursday, July 19.

The event opens at 9 a.m. with refreshments and tours begin at 9:30. The center is located 3 1/2 miles north of Carrington on Highway 281. The morning crop variety and production review will feature NDSU crop breeders and specialists. Crops to be covered include spring wheat, barley, durum, oat, dry bean, soybean, canola and flax.

A second morning tour will feature irrigation research and high value crops. Specialists will discuss opportunities and potential problems for raising Juneberries, herbs, onions and high-yielding wheat. They will also discuss irrigation water delivery, managing weeds and sugar-end defect in potatoes.

After a free noon meal, NDSU agronomists and crop specialists will conduct tours on managing weeds, disease and insects. The weed management tour will feature research on controlling weeds in small grains, soybean, dry bean, canola, flax and sunflower. Also, a weed arboretum containing over 60 weeds will be used to review tips and techniques for properly identifying weeds.

The tour on plant disease and insect management will include an update on small grain diseases and forecasting systems that can help producers make treatment decisions. Specialists will also provide an update on sclerotinia (white mold) research, fungicides and forecasting. Insect concerns will also be discussed with emphasis on insects in corn, beans and sunflower.

A soil, water, and crop management tour will feature discussions on annual forage production and emergency plantings, oilseed fertility needs, a soybean research review and a demonstration on how to properly calibrate planters.

This year’s field day is being held in conjunction with Carrington’s first Pasta Days celebration. The center will also host the North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Association Tour, which starts at 4:30 p.m.
