New and Traditional Crops to be Featured at July 18 NDSU Field Day in Minot

North Dakota State Univesity’s North Central Research Extension Center near Minot will host its annual field Day Wednesday, July 18. The event opens at 9 a.m. with refreshments and tours begin at 9:30.

Throughout the day, specialists will conduct a clinic for diagnosing crop problems. The tours will feature research updates and crop management reviews from NDSU faculty and specialists. Topics on the morning tours include:

  • Crop variety development updates by durum wheat breeder Elias Elias, hard red spring wheat breeders Richard Frohberg and William Berzonsky, barley breeders Richard Horsley and Jerome Franckowiak and oat breeder Mike McMullen.
  • Flax production and management tips from extension agronomist Duane Berglund.
  • Sunflower weed control techniques by weed scientist Kirk Howatt.
  • Tractor ballasting to improve safety and performance by extension agricultural engineer Vern Hofman.

A noon luncheon will be served followed by a presentation on flaxseed in human nutrition by long-time NDSU plant scientist and flax researcher Jack Carter. Afternoon tours begin at 1:15. Topics include:

  • Small grain disease update by extension plant pathologist Marcia McMullen.
  • Small grain herbicide review by Howatt.
  • North Dakota state seed department update by Tom Sinner, director of the field seeds program.
  • Pulse crop review by extension cropping systems specialist Kent McKay.
  • Perennial weed control research review by weed scientist Brian Jenks.
  • Insect pest concerns discussion by extension entomologist Phil Glogoza and crop protection specialist Jan Knodel.
