Crop Production and Management Updates Are Highlights of July 17 Field Day in Langdon

Research updates and the latest recommendations for crop production and management will be highlights of the annual field day at the North Dakota State University Langdon Research Extension Center.

The center is located a mile east of Langdon on N.D. Highway 5 and 1/4 mile south on a gravel road. The day’s events open at 8 a.m. with refreshments. Center director Randy Mehlhoff will give an update on the fund drive and progress on the proposed Vic Sturlaugson Learning Facility at the center. Tours begin at 8:30. Highlights include presentations by a NDSU faculty and specialists:

  • Crop variety development by hard red spring wheat breeder Richard Frohberg, durum breeder Elias Elias and barley breeder Richard Horsley.
  • Forage research and trends by Melhoff.
  • Control of canola flea beetle by extension entomologist Phil Glogoza.
  • Weed control strategies by extension weed specialist Richard Zollinger.
  • Research on root rot by plant pathologist Robert Stack.
  • New developments in sclerotinia (white mold) in broadleaves by plant pathologist Berlin Nelson.
  • Crop disease concerns, fusarium head blight and an update on fungicide application strategies by extension plant pathologist Marcia McMullen.
  • Vegetable production in northeast North Dakota by Mehlhoff

Visitors are welcome to stay for a noon meal sponsored by area financial institutions. Perennial and annual flower trial gardens at the center will also be available for viewing during the day.
