Feedlot School Scheduled at NDSU in September

A feedlot school highlighting feeding and management of cattle to slaughter weight will be held at the Northern Crops Institute at North Dakota State University Sept. 11 and 12.

"There is increasing interest in feeding cattle on the Northern Plains," notes Greg Lardy, NDSU Extension Service beef cattle specialist and one of the school’s organizers. "Ample supplies of cattle, feed grains, forages and coproducts are available for use in feedlots across the area."

The two-day intensive short course will teach all of feedlot management including production, nutrition, business planning, waste management and marketing. Instructors for the course include NDSU faculty from the Northern Crops Institute, the Department of Animal and Range Sciences, and the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center. In addition to classroom instruction, participants will attend sessions at the Northern Crops Institute feedmill, the NDSU Feedlot Research Center and a local commercial feedlot.

Cost of the school is $60, and preregistration is required by Sept. 4. The registration fee covers the cost of materials for the course including a binder complete with handouts and reference material for each participant. For registration materials go to www.northern-crops.com on the Internet or contact Lardy at (701) 231-7660 or Kim Koch at (701) 235-3662. Registration will be limited to the first 25 participants.
