Conference to Focus on Farm Bill Issues

The Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies at North Dakota State University has organized a two-day conference titled "The 2002 Farm Bill: Issues and Alternatives," scheduled for Oct. 29 and 30 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, Fargo, N.D.

According to Won Koo, center director, the conference will focus on emerging issues related to the 2002 farm bill. Specific topics include directions of U.S. farm programs under a freer trade environment, the U.S. farm economy under the 1996 FAIR act, alternative views of the 2002 farm bill, implications of World Trade Organization negotiations and regional free trade agreements, the 2002 farm bill for wheat, feed grains, oilseeds and sugar producers, and other major issues in the farm bill, including risk management, income safety net, food safety and the environment.

The conference is intended for agricultural producers, agricultural industry leaders, policymakers and others with an interest in agricultural policy.

Speakers will include public policy makers, internationally known scholars and directors of policy research centers, commodity group leaders and officials of groups such as the National Farmers Union and the American Farm Bureau.

Governor John Hoeven, Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad, Representative Earl Pomeroy and Underecretary of Agriculture J.B. Penn have been invited to participate.
