South Central N.D. Cow-Calf Management School Scheduled for Ellendale In January

A two-day short course on ranch and cow-calf management for beef cattle producers has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Jan. 24 and 25, in Ellendale at the Farmers Union Meeting Room.

The school will provide broad training in production and economic issues affecting ranching and beef cattle production. During the course, participants will be able to work individually with North Dakota State University specialists to plan production systems for their ranches. Those specialists in range management, beef production, economics and other areas will also serve as instructors for the school.

The registration deadline is Thursday, Jan. 17. Enrollment is limited to the first 25 to apply. The $25 course fee includes all meals and course materials. For more information or to register, call (701) 231-7513 or contact Dickey County Extension agent Eugene Elhard at (701) 349-3249.

The course opens at 10 a.m. Thursday with information on basic beef cow nutrition and physiology. As the day continues, instructors will provide information on nutrient supplementation, creep feeding, byproducts and alternative feeds, vitamins and minerals, and ration balancing.

The balance of the day will be spent on grazing management topics, including the use of specialized grasses to extend the grazing season, and range and pastureland nutrition.

Friday’s topics include reproduction issues, herd health and marketing. The course is scheduled to end at about 3 p.m.
