Lake Region Roundup is Jan. 8-9 at Devils Lake

The annual Lake Region Extension Roundup, which includes two days of presentations on a wide range of agricultural production and farm and family financial management topics, is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 8 and 9, at the Memorial Building in Devil’s Lake. The roundup is organized by the North Dakota State University Extension Service with input from agribusinesses and other agricultural agencies.

Both days open with a sponsored breakfast from 8 to 9:15 a.m. with the program starting at 9:30 a.m.

Highlights of the opening session Tuesday include a review of what’s new in herbicide labels, an explanation of how the falling numbers test relates to grain quality, results of fungicide use in small grain in 2001, small grain variety choices for 2002, and a look at supply and demand and their impact on 2002 wheat prices.

Following a sponsored lunch, afternoon topics will include a review of new weed problems in the area, the effectiveness of pre- and post-harvest weed control, flax seeding rates with fertilizer and winter wheat production in northeast North Dakota.

Concurrent sessions to be held in the Armory Room on Tuesday will include safely surfing the Internet, small grain diseases and control, tips on feeding corn, dry bean management concerns and how to use beef carcass expected progeny differences (EPDs). Topics in the Courthouse Meeting Room will include 2002 crop budgets, durum and hard red spring wheat quality issues, trends in wheat marketing, horse nutrition and health, and maintaining malting barley as a viable crop.

A women in marketing seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Courthouse Historical Room. Preregistration is required for the seminar. Call (701) 780-8229 for more information or to register. Cost of the seminar is $20.

Leading off the general session Wednesday morning will be a summary of N.D. soybean seeding rate studies, new tools and developments in canola production, new developments in black bird management, discussion on the 2002 Farm Program and a look at the 2002 oilseed market.

Following lunch, topics will include seed treatments for flea beetle management in canola, weed control in flax and peas, fertilizer prices and supply for 2002, profitable corn production, and banded sunflower moth and lygus bug management in sunflower.

Wednesday concurrent sessions in the Armory Room will include an update on doing business on the Internet, hog production possibilities for northeast North Dakota, innovations in sunflower production and crop disease control research at NDSU’s Langdon Research Extension Center.

In the Courthouse Meeting Room, sessions will include increasing production efficiency by managing soil variability, setting up and marketing a value-added enterprise, soybean production issues, and wild oat and foxtail control in small grains.

There will be an agritainment seminar in the Courthouse Historical Room from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Specialists will outline how to develop guest business income. There is a $35 preregistration fee per business. The cost will be $45 at the door. For more information, contact your local office of the NDSU Extension Service.
