Annual Cow-Calf Day Scheduled at Carrington Research Extension Center Feb. 7The annual Cow-Calf Day at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center is scheduled for Thursday, Feb 7. The free workshop begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 3:45 p.m. The center is located 3.5 miles north of Carrington on Highway 281. The program will open with discussion of annual forages for beef cattle by Steve Zwinger, research specialist at the center. Next, Manny Encinias, research associate in the NDSU animal and range science department, will review developments in estrous synchronization. Jason Turner, NDSU equine specialist will give an inside look at the new NDSU equine program and point out how the program may benefit cattle producers who work their cattle with horses. Economic concerns of cow share leases will be addressed by Dwight Aakre, NDSU Extension Service farm management specialist. Vern Anderson, livestock researcher at the Carrington center, will discuss results of research on the use of sunflower screenings in cow diets. Karl Hoppe, area extension livestock specialist, will give an update on the Cow Herd Appraisal and Performance Program. Lisa Lee, NDSU beef quality specialist, will review results of the Non-fed Beef Quality Audit. A noon meal will be available a cost of $6.
