North Dakota Dairy Cow College Scheduled

The North Dakota Dairy Cow College will be held at sites across the state Jan. 28 to Feb. 1.

The program is a shared effort of the Midwest Dairy Association and the North Dakota State University Extension Service. Meetings will open at 11 a.m. with an ADA district meeting. That meeting will be followed by educational sessions on assuring dairy beef quality, effect of cow comfort on milk quality and disposal of dead animals. Programs are scheduled for:

  • Monday, Jan. 28, in Linton at the Emmons County Courthouse.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Dickinson at the Knights of Columbus.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 30 in New Salem at the 4-H Building at the Morton County Fairgrounds.
  • Thursday, Jan. 31 in Minot at the Holiday Inn.
  • Friday, Feb. 1 in Jamestown at the Eagles Club.

Featured speakers for the event include Michael Looper, extension dairy specialist at New Mexico State University and J.W. Schroeder, NDSU extension dairy specialist. Looper will provide an overview of research on composting as a means to dispose of dead livestock. He also will discuss new strategies for reducing antibiotic residues in market dairy cows and outline how the dairy industry provides a significant portion of the beef industry and why it’s important for dairy producers to take steps to assure the quality of meat from their animals.

Schroeder will discuss the influence of cow comfort on milk quality, discuss issues facing the North Dakota dairy industry and review dairy research at NDSU, including a study on using oil seed crops in the diets of lactating dairy cows to alter the level of conjugated linoleic acid, an anti-cancer agent, in milk.
