Sunflower Day Scheduled at Carrington Feb.14

Sunflower Day is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14, at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center to provide updates on sunflower production and markets for farmers and crop advisers. The NDSU Extension Service and National Sunflower Association are organizing and conducting the event, according to Greg Endres, NDSU extension area agronomist, and Max Dietrich, NSA production coordinator.

Registration will start at 9 a.m. The educational program will begin at 9:30 with discussion on sunflower insect, weed and disease management. Disease emphasis will be on sclerotinia research and management recommendations. The afternoon agenda includes bird management, NuSun hybrid performance, industry perspectives on confectionary seed quality, and oilseed markets.

The event will also include sunflower seed and crop protection industry booths. Participants will receive sponsored refreshments and noon meal and a free copy of "Crop sequence calculator", a computer CD developed by the Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory in Mandan to help growers select crop rotations. Also, three continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisers have been requested for CCAs attending the meeting.

Details on this event may be obtained by contacting the Carrington center at (701) 652-2951 or by visiting its Web site, www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/carringt/events.htm or the National Sunflower Association at (701) 328-5100 viewing its Web site, www.sunflowernsa.com.
