International Crop Expo is Feb. 20-21 at Alerus CenterThe second annual International Crop Expo is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 20 and 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, N.D. The only large crop show in the northern Red River Valley, the expo provides educational programs and commercial exhibits relevant to all crops produced in the area except sugarbeets, according to Morris Davidson, NDSU Extension Service agent for Grand Forks County. Keynote speaker will be Orion Samuelson, farm broadcaster with WGN Radio in Chicago, at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Also on Wednesday, a potato education seminar will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Topics will include new potato cultivars, sugar end development in processing potatoes, pink eye causes and concerns, Snack Food Association and Chipping Cultivar Trial results, influence of disease on sugar end problems and potato certification programs. Other concurrent sessions available Feb. 20 include crop marketing strategies, fertilizer tips, hard-to-control weeds in row crops, small grains weed control, corn harvest and storage management, iron chlorosis in soybean and soybean aphids and cyst nematodes. Concurrent sessions of Thursday, Feb. 21, will include global market concerns, GPS and new technology, potential insect concerns for 2002, the anthracnose threat to dry beans, storage to maintain pinto bean quality, marketing tools for corn and soybeans and farm program provisions. The International Crop Expo came about through the merger of three other events, the Grand Forks Soybean/Dry Bean Day, Small Grains Expo and Potato Expo. The show will feature commercial booths and exhibits on the Alerus Center floor and in the Ballroom overflow area. Admission and parking are free.
