Stocker/Yearling Cattle Workshops Scheduled for North Dakota and South Dakota

Extension specialists from North Dakota State University and South Dakota State University will team up in April to present yearling cattle workshops in Napoleon, N.D., and Gettysburg, S.D.

Andy Gross, NDSU Extension Agent in Logan County said the free workshops are geared especially for producers who run yearlings on grass through the summer months, a practice especially common in south central North Dakota and north central South Dakota.

Ken Wonnenberg, SDSU Extension Educator in Potter County, said the topics will be helpful to anyone concerned with managing cattle and pasture resources to get the best possible return.

The first "Going to Grass" stocker/yearling cattle workshop is set for Monday, April 1, at the Napoleon Sale Barn in Napoleon, N.D. It runs from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The second workshop is set for Tuesday, April 2, at Bob's Steakhouse in Gettysburg, S.D. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Speakers at the workshops include SDSU extension risk and business management specialist Matt Diersen, talking about the outlook and economics of yearlings in 2002; NDSU extension rangeland management specialist, Kevin Sedivec, on optimizing grazing management for yearlings on pasture; NDSU extension veterinarian Charlie Stoltenow on health programs for yearling cattle.

SDSU extension beef specialist Cody Wright will discuss implant programs for yearlings. SDSU extension beef specialist Trey Patterson will delve into supplementation programs for cattle on pasture and water quality issues.

NDSU extension beef specialist Greg Lardy talks about business management issues for stocker cattle operators. SDSU biology/microbiology professor Mike Hildreth discusses parasitology in yearling cattle.

Those planning to attend the North Dakota workshop should RSVP the Logan County Extension Office by March 25. Contact Andy Gross by telephone at (701) 754-2504, or by e-mail at agross@ndsuext.nodak.edu
