NDSU Releases Roundup Ready Resistant Soybean Variety

The North Dakota State University Agricultural Experiment Station has announced the release of "RG200RR," a soybean variety that is resistant to the herbicide Roundup and the first transgenic soybean variety released by NDSU.

Numbers will be used to designate transgenic varieties in order to avoid confusion with named non-transgenic types, according to Al Schneiter, chair of the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences. RG stands for Roughrider Genetics, 2 the year of release, 00 the soybean maturity group, and RR designates resistance to the herbicide Roundup.

In comparisons with the variety "Traill," across 17 sites in 2000 and 2001, RG200RR yielded 1 bushel less, matured a day later, had slightly better lodging resistance, and was similar in plant height and iron deficiency chlorosis than Traill. RG200RR will be marketed under the Roughrider Genetics trademark by the NDSU Research Foundation.
