NDSU Field Day in Minot Set for July 17Updates on North Dakota State University crops research will be highlights of the annual field day at the NDSU North Central Research Extension Center at Minot Wednesday, July 17. The day will open at 9 a.m. with refreshments and a comments from Patricia Jensen, Vice President and Dean of Agricultural Affairs at NDSU, Ken Grafton, new director of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, and Jay Fisher, director of the North Central Research Extension Center. The center is located one mile south of Minot on U.S. Highway 83. Morning tours will feature biofuels and their use, an update on NDSU’s transgenic crop research and information on NDSU research on hard spring wheat, durum wheat, oat, barley, flax and soybean. After a free noon luncheon, an afternoon tour will feature information on disease control in wheat, alternative crops, weed control, and insect management in sunflowers and small grain. There will be a crop clinic for problem diagnosis throughout the day and NDSU scientists and extension specialists will be on hand to lead discussion and answer questions. A hay and forage tour is scheduled for 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. The tour will feature information on alfalfa variety selection, cutting management and fertilizer recommendations. Additional tour stops will focus on annual forage crops, grass species choices for hay, pasture and CRP, hay marketing alternatives, results of forage trials at the center, strategies for feeding annual forages and using crop residue such as chaff and straw to extend forage supplies.
